COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER AWARDS 2022/2023 The last of three St Mewan Parish Community Volunteer Award Winners 2022/23. Polgooth with Trelowth, Sticker with Hewaswater and Trewoon. A lovely welcoming lunchtime spent meeting with the St Marks Winter Warmer Team in Sticker who have won this year’s St Mewan Parish Community Volunteer Award. The Team opened the doors to St Marks Church Hall through the winter months and have personally contributed in offering their culinary delights with a selection of 3 homemade soups, bread rolls, beverages, and biscuits all for £2.00! The purpose of this was in response to the energy crisis, to welcome individuals who may want a friendly chat in a warm and comfortable space through some cold winter months. It was especially rewarding that one lady had learnt some valuable information, just through friendly chat about entitlement to financial support because where she lives is off the Gas Grid. One delighted visitor, well done ladies. Oh, and by the way the James Martin Cream of Cauliflower Soup was at the winning post this week 😊 There was a lot of nominations this year and whilst you may not have scooped the win, St Mewan Parish Council continue to value all individual volunteers and groups who regularly contribute to making their community a better place. So, a big thank you to everyone who does their bit. Read More...

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER AWARDS The second of three St Mewan Parish Community Volunteer Award Winners 2022/23. Polgooth with Trelowth, Sticker with Hewaswater and Trewoon. Nicola Bunney and Sandra Heyward work tirelessly, with other volunteers, to collect surplus food from partners that they no longer need and distribute this to the community via “pop-up” Community Larder days on a weekly basis, thus reducing hunger and food waste. The ethos of this volunteer-led Community Larder is about caring for the person and or families within the community as a whole, anyone who needs a helping hand up, rather than a handout, particularly in these difficult times. Well done to you all. There were a lot of nominations this year and whilst you may not have scooped the win, St Mewan Parish Council continue to value all individual volunteers and groups who regularly contribute to making their community a better place. St Mewan Parish Council Community Volunteer Award Winner for Polgooth with Trelowth 2022/2023

Published: 16 Mar 23

A super morning spent meeting with 25/170 members of Polgooth Community & Garden Club who have won this year’s St Mewan Parish Community Volunteer Award. They meet once a month and everyone is made to feel very welcome with a typed schedule of what is planned for the months ahead. Chatting to some people, who even happen to live in neighbouring parishes, the meetings are invaluable as they are not just about gardening but helping individuals overcome social isolation. They continue to build a strong based community spirit with all their planned events and have recently raised £500 to assist financially in the renewal of the new floor in Polgooth Village Hall. Well done! There was a lot of nominations this year and whilst you may not have scooped the win, St Mewan Parish Council continue to value all individual volunteers and groups who regularly contribute to making their community a better place. Using the Parish Council website please go to the ' St Mewan Info' toolbar, drop down to Parish Footpaths, Bridleways and Stiles. Clicking on the map will identify the path number and clicking on the schedule list underneath will show what the Parish Council are responsible for. Any item not identified on the schedule is a Cornwall Council matter which you can report direct. Two Parish Councillor Vacancies by Co-Option

As a Parish Cllr you play a vital role in shaping and directing the effectiveness of local services for the benefit of local people. You become someone your community will look to for help, guidance and support, a community leader with the power to influence decisions for the benefit of the people you serve. Seeing your community change for the better as a result of decisions you have helped make, is something that will give you a sense of achievement and pride. Councillors are people from all walks of life, from all age groups who wish to give a little of their time and expertise to representing their community. A good parish council is active for its people, representative of and listening to ALL sections of its community. Such a council can only be achieved by a council drawn from a variety of different people from every adult age group. St Austell Foodbank

St Austell Foodbank

Published: 30 Apr 20

We are aware that this month maybe the first in which some households don’t get their usual pay packet. Whilst not a long term solution, St Austell Food bank can help provide food for around 2 weeks if needed. Universal credit should be available to people who are out of work – applications are made online. St Austell Foodbank do cover the area around St Austell i.e. as far as Gorran/ Mevagissey/ St Ewe/ St Mewan/ Carlyon. They have introduced a new e-referral system, and have also now have delivery 3 times a week. If you can’t afford food, you can call 0808 2082138 for free (open Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm). You’ll confidentially talk to a trained Citizens Advice agent and, if needed, they’ll issue you with a food bank voucher. Please note this number is for people who do not have enough money for food. Message from Chairman John Kneller

Message from Chairman John Kneller

Published: 17 Apr 20

As we now enter another 3 weeks of “lockdown” we wanted to send out a HUGE thank you to all of the marvellous volunteers across our communities in our Parish including the village shops. It is also good to acknowledge that we have increased the volunteer numbers to well over 75, up 50% from 3 weeks ago. We have now delivered 2 leaflet drops to all households across the Parish, that’s close to 3000 activities alone plus all of the shopping, prescriptions, papers, and other items to help people who need support at this time. The second leaflet has also initiated contacts from people who are in need of some assistance so that demonstrates that it was the right thing to do, those requests are now being actioned or signposted to the most appropriate support agencies. We have been in regular contact with Cornwall Council, Volunteer Cornwall and Age UK all of whom are highly complimentary of what you are all achieving as they are not receiving requests for assistance from our area because YOU have all got it covered, well done everybody and thanks again. We really do appreciate everybody's efforts, as do those who we are supporting, a quote from Mr Richardson today when I delivered his shopping. ” My wife and I really want to thank all the wonderful volunteers for their support, like so many other people we are shielding for 3 months and we wouldn’t know what to do without your help, it is a real lifeline to have people who we can rely on to help us out at this difficult time.” THANK YOU VERY MUCH, WE ARE SO LUCKY TO LIVE IN REAL COMMUNITIES! Sorry couldn;t resist a sneaky photo of you Mr Chairman on one of your daily deliveries. Glad to see you are using some PPE! Read More...

Join our band of growing volunteers!

Published: 1 Apr 20

St Mewan Parish Council are working with an amazing bank of volunteers centred around the villages of Trewoon, Polgooth and Sticker who are continuing to support the elderly or vulnerable residents. We are also a ‘distribution hub’ for Volunteer Cornwall who work very closely with Cornwall Council to put in place a network of volunteers to support vulnerable people. If you are fit and healthy and would like to be added to the list of our formal local volunteers for St Mewan Parish please email your name, address and phone number to clerk@stmewanparishcouncil.gov.uk. All the volunteers will be considered ‘key workers’ as they will be providing essential care and support in their local community, delivering food, shopping or medication. In addition, if you are particularly concerned about someone who has particular needs, please let the Parish Council know. We have direct links to Cornwall Council’s local Community Link Officer, Volunteer Cornwall and other support organisations who will be best placed to organise a response. Thank you for being part of such a great community. Wendy Yelland - Clerk to St Mewan Parish Council. Read More...
